It took a group of people who were completely consumed with their conquest of freedom to produce the first permanent colony in the Americas, Jamestown. The Pilgrims who settled Jamestown were essentially a desperate crowd who felt that they had no choice but to pursue a new life on a new continent. The political and religious climate in England prior to 1600 left this group of reformists in the cold so to speak in relation to their religious freedom at home.
